September 2022

I took all the  boys home after sleepover. Jack was clever and made them help him clean up his room before they left. After I was back, Stuart and I took the kids to Dick’s Sporting Goods, stopped at Kia to look at cars, then stopped at Lowe’s to get some bolts to fix the roof of our golf cart. Stuart and I then took the kids home and headed to lunch. After lunch we did our weekly shopping which involved buying some new sheets for Jack. He has decided he wants to make his room a bit more grown up. So we agreed to that. We also ordered him a volleyball themed duvet cover. It was all due to arrive in the week.

After we were home we spent the rest of the afternoon getting the roof on the golf cart. We then went in the pool for a while. Of course this time of the year the mosquitoes are out, so our pool time was cut short. Mitch had come over and help us with the golf cart. He then went out and got some food for all of us. I fed the kids, and Mitch fed the adults. Stuart went to bed just after Millie did around 8:40 PM, and Jack and I followed around 9:30 PM. We are such a party animals!

In the middle of the night on Monday night, around 2:30 AM, the dogs started going bananas. We crate them now every night, so they aren’t disturbing us. I walked downstairs assuming I would walk into a gunman. Sadly, that’s where my brain goes. I have no idea what they were barking at. But it did disrupt my sleep for a little bit. My alarm went off at 6 AM and we all got up and got ready for school. My teammate, who had been out for previous week with Covid, returned to school on Monday. That is Millie‘s teacher, so I was thrilled. We’ve had heat advisory days at school, so that means no afternoon recess. That becomes such a bummer because the kids get very restless. Hoping for cooler weather by fall break.

After school Millie and I headed to gymnastics. I stopped for gas before going to Jack’s football game. They were playing ACP again so there was no 7th grade team. Therefore the 8th grade game was moved up to 4:30 pm, which helped us when it comes to club volleyball. After the game, that they won and Jack played more in, I took Carter and Jack to get some food and then dropped them off at the Starbucks so Vicki could take them to club practice. I then headed to get Millie from gymnastics. Millie came home and ate dinner. She took a shower and went to bed. Around 930 I headed out to get Jack from Starbucks. Once we were back home he took a shower and went to bed around 1030. I couldn’t go to sleep for whatever reason, so I stayed up until about midnight.

Tuesday morning we headed to school. There was an accident and a road closure so we decided to go a different way. School was relatively sane. I feel like I’m always playing catch-up. That’s not entirely fun, but it is what it is. We had a fire drill, which always throws everyone off. We also have been on heat advisory the last two days so that has made for a fun afternoon for us. I got a message in the middle the day from Jack asking me if I would take him to watch the girls’ volleyball team play at East Mark. I normally am totally against that kind of thing on a Tuesday evening, simply because it’s our only evening that we’re at home. but I was weak. On the way home I got groceries from Aldi. I ran them to the house and then made lasagna. Don’t get excited, it was lazy man lasagna. It’s just three ingredients so it’s really easy. I then decided I would get my swimsuit on because after I picked Jack up I was planning to hop in the pool for a bit. I left the house just after six to pick Jack up from the volleyball match. Ellsworth is my worst nightmare because Queen Creek did its part when constructing that road, but Mesa did not. It’s three lanes until you hit Mesa and then it’s two lanes. Totally stupid!

We got home and I hopped in the pool while Millie took a shower and Jack put away his clean clothes. I didn’t stay long in the pool as the mosquitoes are at an all time high in their munch about. When I got back in the house and went upstairs to shower, I discovered that Millie not only had put her clean clothes away, but was organizing her dresser. That’s the first time that has happened.

Wednesday was a half day and I had to run Millie home right after school. When I finished my team leader meeting I headed home, picked up Millie and went to pick up Jack before dropping Millie at gymnastics and heading to Fry’s to get prescriptions. When Jack and I got home I swept the pool while he did homework. I made him a pizza and then headed to get Millie. When she and I got home, she went to shower and Elise came over for a visit.

Thursday Millie wasn’t feeling well again and she wanted to stay home. I didn’t fight her, but she got up anyway and got ready. We ended up leaving later than normal and she apologized because she thought it was her fault. I told her it wasn’t. We still got to school way before we needed to.  School was fine. I don’t even start teaching until nearly 10 am on Thursdays because of specials and morning recess. It’s nice to ease into the day. After school Millie and I ran to the grocery store to get the boys some food. Because I take them to volleyball directly after their football games on Thursday, I need to feed them. Fast food gets too expensive so I decided to try making them food instead. At volleyball I got some more lessons written for Empower. I left Millie at home because she gets bored. I got a message from Millie that scared me. It just said ‘Mom, help!’  Really? Seems she wasn’t sure how to do a math game on the computer. I nearly came through the screen to choke her.

My team wore these shirts on Friday. My teammate Krista, the one with the glasses, made them for us. This is her side hustle. Look how united we are.

Friday I got a message in the morning that Stuart was coming home early. We were going on a date that afternoon and Elise was taking our kids to Elevate, the bounce place. We drove the golf cart to Creekside Taco. We reconnected and really talked about life. I love that man more than anything in this world and need to make sure I tell him that more often. We both decided we needed to be more intentional with our time together.
Saturday morning my alarm went off at 5 am and I was showered and out the door to fly to El Paso to see Liz! She and Melissa picked me up and we went to the grocery store. We then went to Hatch, New Mexico, to the Hatch Green Chile Festival. It was hot and sticky. We didn’t stay long as it wasn’t quite what we had envisioned.

On the way back we met up at The Blue Moon Bar with Liz’s first friend in New Mexico, Andrew.

He’s the one in the cowboy hat! Ha!

We left this place around 8 pm and proceeded to stay up until 3 am, laughing. We didn’t get out of bed until nearly 10 am. We got ready and decided to go to Mesilla, a little town about 15 minutes away. It was where Billy the Kid was tried and sentenced to hanging.

There were some cute little shops. We walked around for a couple of hours. We then came back to the house for a rest and the plan was to go back to The Blue Moon Bar to hear a live band. After a while we decided we wouldn’t be going back to the bar as Andrew, Liz’s friend, told us it was standing room only and he was standing outside in the sun. Instead, we decided to go to Si SeƱors for dinner and come back and watch movies. We didn’t stay up as late because we had to be up early to get to the airport.

We were up early on Monday morning. Liz and I dropped Melissa at the airport and then went to have breakfast. I got home around noon and Stuart left. I was supposed to take Jack and his friends to play volleyball, but he lied to me about something stupid so I canceled volleyball for him. I’ve finally found his ‘currency’ or what means something to him. Hopefully he learns his lesson quickly. Neither kid had activities because it was Labor Day.  Elise and the boys came over for a swim and dinner.

Tuesday school seemed to go on forever. After school I took Millie home and then headed to Jack’s football game. When we got home, he showered and ate. I worked on my project which is almost finished. But stupidly I committed to doing writing plans for Kindergarten. Once the kids were in bed I watched all the trash TV I could get in.

Wednesday I had training after school at the district office on the science programs in Queen Creek. I then went home to take Millie to gymnastics and on to Jack’s football game. They won, again.

Thursday school was uneventful. After school the boys had another football game, which they won. I took the time Brophy for volleyball and Millie went with me. She watched them practice and then came and sat with me. She had brought things in her bag to do, so that is helpful.

Friday school was school. It had been a long week for just four days. Stuart didn’t come home as he had to work over the weekend.

Saturday Liz came to town and Jack drove us to Creekside Taco. This was my beverage.

We had dinner at Creekside Taco. Millie went to her friend Brinley’s house and had a sleepover.

Sunday we got up and Liz left for the airport. Brinley’s mom dropped Millie home around 1 pm. We headed to Jack’s pre-season club volleyball party at Carter’s house.

The pool at Carter’s house is awesome. We spent the afternoon just relaxing and getting to know the other families. Stuart missed it as he had to stay in Gallup for the weekend to do new teacher orientation.

Monday morning Millie struggled to get out of bed. I took Jack to school and  then came back to get her. She had calmed down by the time I got home and acted as if nothing had happened. She’s so irritating at times.

Monday after school I took Millie to gymnastics and then went home. Russ came for a visit and was able to watch Jack’s football game. He stayed less than 12 hours. I picked Millie up at 7:30. I then went to Starbucks to pick Jack up from volleyball practice. Then home to make dinner for Russ, who showed up shortly after we got home. We had fajitas. I think it might be the first time I had cooked in forever.

Tuesday morning Russ was up and left before 6 am. I decided to take Jack to school and come back to get Millie. By the time I got back she was ready to go to school. Tuesday Jack had a playoff game and then volleyball practice. They had an extra practice this week in preparation of their Saturday tournament. I picked him up at Starbucks again. Millie and I just spent the evening chilling at home.

Wednesdays at school are college and career days. We all pick a college to represent. Of course I have picked my alma mater, PIttsburg State University, but have decided I’m going to buy some other college shirts to wear throughout the year. Last week I wore a Syracuse shirt in honor of my
teammate who is on the right in the picture below. Her name is Jen Merkle, but we just call her Merkle. This day I wore a Husker shirt in honor of a 6th grade teacher named Sam. She’s the one in the middle.

Thursday was another game for Jack. Stuart got home from Gallup on Wednesday night so he was able to go to  game. He had the rest of his dental work done that morning, finally. Jack won his football game which meant they would play the following Monday in the playoffs. He and Carter were whisked away to volleyball.

Friday school was as usual. Stuart picked the kids up to take them to their wellness visit. I went to happy hour with some people from work down at Santan Flat. Stuart came down to pick me up. When we got back to the house we went to Creekside Taco on the golf cart with Elise. Then we came back to our house for a while.

Saturday morning we got up and took Jack to Gavin‘s house to catch a ride to the volleyball tournament. We then took Millie to gymnastics. We headed to the volleyball tournament. They won their first two games and then we went to pick Millie up from the gym. We took her to eat lunch and then headed back to the volleyball facility. They played at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock. They reffed at 3 o’clock. They kept up with the teams rather well. But they got destroyed by the last team they played. It seems that team had four or five players that were on the national championship team the year before. So I don’t think they were terribly disappointed that they didn’t win.  We got home around 5:30 and the Hills invited us over for dinner. We didn’t stay long because it had been a long day and we were all exhausted.

Sunday I finally got up and went walking with Sue. We caught up on all the things that were going on in our lives. And we had a great time like we always do. Stuart had taken his car in for a service on Thursday afternoon, expecting it would be ready on Saturday afternoon. They found something wrong with one of his tires and had to order it and it wouldn’t be here till Monday. So because he doesn’t trust the pieces of crap cars that sit in our drive and garage, he decided to rent a car from the Mesa airport. So Sunday morning we went to pick that up after we had been to the grocery store. We then went to the Empower warehouse so that I could get kindergarten materials in order to write the kindergarten writing lessons. Again, I do realize I’m nuts!

We decided we would take Jack to lunch for his birthday since Stuart wouldn’t be here on Thursday when his actual birthday was. We went to Buffalo Wild Wings  and then made a trip to Famous Footwear to buy some shoes. Jack ended up finding a pair of volleyball shoes he wanted. They are a size 12. His foot is growing faster than I can keep up with it. When we got home Stuart decided he would just pack up and leave. I think that’s the worst part about a Sunday, is the anticipation. Once Stuart had gone, the Hills came over for swimming. We made nuggets and fries for everyone. They went home around 8 o’clock and the kids and I settled in for the night.

Monday I got up and took Jack to school and then came back and collected Millie. Our team has decided that we will go on a Project Exploration trip called the Old West Quest. It’s a trip down to Bisbee to tour the mines and then to Tombstone. After school I drove Millie to gymnastics, came home to let the dogs go pee, and then heading to Jack’s football game. He played virtually the entire game. And they won against the best team in their bracket. So they were going to the championship on Thursday. After the football game, Jack went off with Carter‘s mom to volleyball. I picked Millie up from gymnastics and took her home. I then returned to the Arizona volleyball facility for a parent meeting. It seems that their coach doesn’t really want parents to talk to him after the tournament because he feels like it would be a little bit controversial. I think he felt he needed this meeting for one particular parent. The volleyball crowd is usually pretty mild mannered and really supportive. However this one mother is quite a treat. When Jack and I returned home Millie was asleep on the sofa. I carried her upstairs to her bed. I set her alarm and then went to shower. Jack had showered and was eating when I got downstairs. He went to bed around 10:30 and I follow shortly after that.

Tuesday was the day I look forward to the most each week. I don’t have to run children around the valley. It’s quite nice. School seemed to fly by and then Millie and I went to pick Jack up from football practice and we are headed home. I then went to dinner with my friend Debi to Pita Jungle which is really good. While I was gone, the kids showered and fix itself something to eat. They were laying on the sofa when I got home.

Wednesday morning our normal routine took place. After school I headed to pick Jack up from football practice after dropping Millie at gymnastics. Jack and I just chill most of the evening. I went to lunch and Millie from gymnastics, brought her home and had her shower, and then hit her off the bed after having food.

Thursday was Jack’s 14th birthday. We had birthday lunch the Sunday before and he had opened his presents. So there really wasn’t anything open. He did open his cards and a present from his grandma the night before after Millie got home from gymnastic. He didn’t seem to bothered that there were no presents on his actual birthday. We headed to school and at the end of the day Millie and I went home and packed a cooler. We then headed to Bogle junior high for the championship football game.

They won! After the game, Kristi, Carter‘s mom took Millie home for me. I took all four boys to volleyball at Brophy Prep. Gavin and Owen came to watch the last half of the football game. It was a pretty good birthday for Jack. I got some work done on the project from Empower while the boys practiced. When we left we went for Culver's food and then we headed home. Millie was asleep on the sofa when I got home so I carried her upstairs to her bed. Jack showered and then went to bed.

Friday after school I went and picked up Jack’s bags and he stayed for his football banquet and the high school football game. I then went and picked up the RV in storage and brought it to the house. Our hope was to clean it out and get it prepared for the following week in Mexico. Then Elise took me to get Stuart‘s car from Kia. And once I was back home, Stuart got home around 7 PM. We then read an email together about many missing assignments that Jack had in Algebra I, one in social studies, and one in science. This kid is surely going to be the death of me. I just can’t tolerate the lack of attention he has. And I don’t want to blame his ADD, because he is medicated for that. Carter’s Dad ended up bringing Jack home from the football game. Naturally, we reamed him on Friday night for the assignment issue.

Saturday morning we were all up and out the door just before 8 o’clock. Millie went to gymnastics, Jack went to get a perm, and I went to walk with Carter’s little brother, Camden. He has a condition called PCM. This condition keeps him from being able to walk or talk, it also has a life expectancy that he has already surpassed. He is 11 years old. So my conversation with Jack before I left that morning basically involves tears and I explain to him that not everyone had his ability so the fact that he was not working to his potential was really disappointing to me and to Stuart. Raising teenagers is not for the faint at heart.

We walked at 5K and then I got a message from Millie saying that she had forgotten her water bottle. She asked if I could bring her water. There’s a water fountain at the gym but she said it tastes gross. So, I went and took her water bottle because she acted like she was dying. I did tell her I would never do that again and her water bottle is her responsibility. Again, what is it when you do too much for them? What is it when we do too little for them? How do you find the balance?

We picked Millie up from gymnastics at 12:30 and went back to our house. Stuart and I decided to get in the pool and swim for a bit. The pool was freezing and we decided that was probably our last swim for this season. Stuart got the charcuterie tray ready for our evening with our friends Bill and Stacey. We got to their house around 6:30 PM and there were lovely charcuterie trays there. Stacey actually works with Carter’s mom, Kristi. So Kristi and her husband Bob were there. There was another couple there as well, but didn’t stay quite as long as we did. It was a nice evening of catching up and Kristi said some lovely things about Jack, which made me feel like  a horrible mother for jumping on him all the time. It was nice to hear someone else’s perspective about your kid.

Stuart’s spread.

The ‘Old Fashion’ tray.

The dessert tray.

Sunday morning I got up and had a walk with Sue. As always we solved all the problems of the world, most commonly is my problems with my children. I do always appreciate her insight because she has been where I am and is no longer where I am. It’s nice to have that perspective of someone who has gone through this similar situation. Stuart left early in the afternoon after we did our normal Sunday errands.

Monday I got an email from two of the three teachers I had emailed regarding man child’s grades. His algebra teacher said he never received the notice that Jack turned in the work so I corrected that. Although I agree Jack needs to be held accountable, why are we grading homework? When you grade homework, you are not necessarily assessing what a kid knows. You may be assessing their parents’ knowledge, or older sibling, or maybe they score very low because they are taking care of younger siblings when they get home from school, or maybe they are being physically or mentally abused and just can’t do everything, or maybe they have ADD and can’t focus, or, or, or, or. Don’t get me wrong, homework is okay for accountability, I suppose. But to grade it? To instill discipline and being able to meet deadlines, sure, but grades? Nope! Hard pass, as the kids say!

I picked Jack up from school then headed to take Millie to gymnastics, stopped to get money for Mexico and then home to feed Jack before heading to drop him off at Starbucks for the carpool for volleyball. I met my friend Mindy for dinner and then headed to pick Millie up from gymnastics. I took her to the house to take a shower and then headed back to Starbucks to pick up Jack. I feel like I’m the Dunkin’ Donut guy in the commercial of the 80s that said ‘Time to make the donuts. I made the donuts.’  It is a bit of a rat race at this age.

Tuesday morning I had a parent teacher conference in the morning with a child’s mom that I thought would be a bit difficult. It turns out she was just begging for someone to tell her to put her child on medication so that he could get focused. I guess I was that person! At the beginning of 31 years, I have decided I really don’t care if I get fired. I’m going to do what’s right by these kids. And the recommendation was for her to take him to her pediatrician in order to get him some help. In fifth grade they start to have self-esteem issues that are way worse than any fear you have a medication.

The school day went by quickly and I had another conference at the end of the day with a student’s mom who was wanting her child on a 504 plan. I discouraged that because I felt like she actually was making the progress that she needed to make. This child was diagnosed with cancer in the third grade and missed a total of 71 days between third grade and fourth grade because of the cancer. She’s now in remission, at school all days and has made huge progress. Her mom was so beyond complementary of my efforts with her child, which will always make someone feel amazing.

After school Millie and I went to get Jack. I took the kids home and returned to school for a field trip meeting. I then headed to dinner with my girls: Elisa, Sherry, Mary and Gine. We were celebrating Gina and Elisa’s birthdays. I am never bored with these ladies. They are such a huge part of my life. Their wisdom, some having been where I am with my kids at the moment, is so invaluable. I love them so much. As always, at the end of our evening, Weezer (Mary) supplied us all with eggs! I know Mary has had a rough go of things, having lost Mack recently, but I so admire her strength to still live life. I hope I even have a smidge of her resiliency as I go through life.

Wednesday went as quickly as Tuesday at school. We are working hard to get things tidied up before the end of the quarter. We had parent teacher conferences after school that went really well. At my age and with my experience, there is no one or no thing that can scare me. Even my potentially tricky parents were totally fine. I finished just in time to get Millie from the house, pick Jack up from school and head to take Millie to gymnastics. Jack had a bite to eat when we got home. I then headed out to meet up with my old roommate Bethany for dinner. It was so good to catch up with her. I then took Millie to McDonalds after picking her up from the gym. Once we were home she showered and laid on the sofa, eventually falling asleep around 9:15. Jack went to bed about an hour later.

Thursday morning Jack and I were out of the house to meet with his Algebra teacher. It went as I suspected. I expressed my disgruntlement and he poo pooed me. Oh well, I told Jack he was going to have to play this teacher’s game and just get this year over with. We agreed he would go to tutoring 4 days a week starting in second quarter. I told him if the teacher thought he cared a bit more he might work with him a bit more. We shall see.

Thursday after school I had a few more conferences, but in the empty slots I copied our grade level copies to get us ready for the beginning of second quarter. In some of my down time I went to get Jack from school. We then went back to my school for me to attend a conference and then I took him home. On the way home we discovered Grammie and Pop had made it home. I was so relieved. They were trying to jump start my dad’s truck. We stopped long enough to pick up some things they had for us. Jack and I headed home and Jack got ready for volleyball. He decided he needed to drive the Jeep to our house, so I let him. Then when we picked Millie up and went back to Grammie and Pop’s Jack drive the Ford Flex. I decided to trade cars because that morning the Jeep’s check engine light came on. Ugh! So I booked it into the shop to have it checked before we left for Mexico on Monday. Boo! I headed back to school for the rest of my conferences. When I finished I went home and my mom was there hanging out with Millie. My parents have gotten a bit fragile this summer. They were both hacking up a lung and ended up going to urgent care earlier that day. My dad desperately needs a pace maker as well. It makes me sad for sure. My mom decided to go home because she didn’t feel well. Millie took a shower and plopped on the sofa. She fell asleep around 8:30 or so. I took her up to her bed. I then headed out around 9:30 to pick Jack up from the meeting spot for volleyball carpool. One of the moms had actually picked him up from our house because of my conferences. He got home, showered and went to sleep on the sofa. I made him go to bed then I came back downstairs to watch tv, and naturally fell asleep.

Friday was our last day of school for the quarter. I have had such an amazing quarter. Thank the Lord I got this job this year. It has saved my sanity and my love of education! After school I went to get Jack. My mom had picked Millie up from school. When I had Jack, we went to get Millie. Elise came over after her kids were in bed. She stayed quite late, which was rough on me Saturday morning due to Jack’s volleyball tournament.

Saturday morning I got up and took Jack to Starbucks for a ride to the tournament. I came back home and took Millie to gymnastics, then went to the volleyball tournament. Jack had games at 9, 11, 2 and 4. It makes for a long day for sure. They did just as well in this tournament as they did in the previous tournament. Around 12:30 I went to get Millie and took her home. She wanted to go to the park on her bike so I told her she could and if she needed anything just to call Grammie and Pop. Although they had medicine, they still didn’t feel very well. They decided not to come to the volleyball tournament. Jack understood. Jack played really well. During the intense matches he was on the court the entire time. I am so impressed with his athleticism.

After the tournament, I got home and Elise took me to pick up my Jeep, which was a mere $1200 to fix. I hate unexpected costs. Once I was home, Elise decided to go get pizza. She got to the house just before Stuart arrived from Gallup. This was another Saturday that new teachers in Gallup had to go to training. He was one of the trainers. Once he was home and unpacked, we ate pizza and wings. We sat around the house and talked with Mitch and Elise until about 10 pm. Once they had gone home, we made the kids go to bed. We nearly beat them to bed ourselves. It was a good evening. Fall break is upon us.

August 2022

Sunday morning the girls were up early from the birthday sleepover. I piled them all in the car and took them home around 10 o’clock. It’s the only way I can assure they will be out of my house before noon. The rest of the afternoon Stuart and I went shopping and then came home and Elise came over to have a swim. I got out of the pool around 4 PM to go have dinner with Sherry, Mary, Elisa, and Gina. We were celebrating my birthday and Mary’s birthday. I got this lovely robe that you see below. And the following picture shows me with my new jewelry and my new handbag. We went to North Italia for dinner, which was delightful. We had this cute waiter who was young enough to be my son. He was very charming.
From Gina!
The jewelry was from Mary and Elisa. The bag was from Sherry! They all know me so well.

This is the burn mark that Jack had when he got in my car after football practice. It seems that he had a rub in a razor on his arm until it created a burn. He is clearly the gifted child!

Because I lost the blog this month, these pictures are really all I have to create my memories. I know that we were very busy with gymnastics, volleyball, and football. Millie did not forget the dogs birthdays on August 15. She created her own pup cup for each of the dogs.

So this happened, we bought a golf cart. Why? I really have no idea. But we bought it, and it is very you, and the children can only drive it when either Stuart or myself are in the golf cart. So naturally on the Tuesday after the dogs birthday, Jack wanted to drive us all to Creekside taco for dinner. Once we got there the kids were bored. It turns out that they just wanted to ride in the golf carts. They could’ve saved us a lot of money and we know that.

Jack had his first football game on August 15. It was hot as spire. He didn’t play a great deal, but I don’t think he’s terribly disappointed. Football is not going to be his forte. That pleases us down to the ground.

Jack was able to go to a park and play volleyball on Friday evening, so Millie felt left out. We drove the golf cart with Millie down to my mom and dad‘s house. They aren’t there, mind you, but we drove anyway. Drew wanted to check out the lights but he figured out how to fix.

This was the scene on Saturday, August 27, when we helped Liz pack up her truck and move to Las Cruces, New Mexico. It was exactly 9 years ago on that date that Stuart and I left for the Middle East. I was very sad to see her go, but I know I will go and visit her. In fact I already bought

Jack decided on Saturday night he would have a sleepover with all of his volleyball buddies. So Stuart made them fried chicken sandwiches.

Millie stayed up as late as she could on Saturday night but then clearly fell asleep with the dogs on the sofa.

July 2022

I was awake at about 6:30 AM. I got up and did some work that needed to be edited. I then messaged one of the managers and told her I would be unavailable until July 12th. I may go crazy before this project is over. We spent the rest of the day relaxing by the pool. We then had a fabulous Japanese meal at an exquisite restaurant. It was amazing! The kids had room service while we dined out.

James showed up just after midnight. He didn’t get the greeting the others had gotten. But we saw him at breakfast the following morning.

We had breakfast and then I went up to our room. We spent most of the morning at the pool and then packed our bags to prepare for the villa transfer.

Why can’t you play cricket in a pool?

We transferred to the villa and were absolutely blown away.

Millie had the room on the right and Jack and Billy had the room on the left. Jack was irritated he didn’t get his own room. What an absolutely spoiled brat! I was so irritated by his entitlement.

This is the view from our villa to the large villa where James and Matt’s families stayed.

This was our outside bathroom.

Another view of the bathroom.

I was sitting at a table, working. There are worse views for sure.

Sunday afternoon we hung around the Villa and then Sunday evening we went to dinner at an Italian restaurant right on the beach. It was so lovely! When we got back to the villa we stayed up in the common area and played a little music trivia. I was terrible at it. Nicole, Matt’s fiancĆ© was the DJ initially, but then Matt took over and totally bored people. It was hilarious.

Monday morning I was up around 6 AM and did some work on the Empower project. Around 8 AM the villa staff made us breakfast. We had Nasi Goreng, which is basically fried rice with a fried egg on it. They also had noodles with a fried egg. It was delightful! Millie chose either a yogurt bowl or pancakes and Jack had the pancakes most mornings.

We got ready to go to a place called Mrs. Sippy, which is a pool and beach club. We spent the majority of the day there. I actually jumped off of the high dive. When we returned to the Villa we took showers and got dressed to go to a place called Mexicali for dinner. It was a set menu with five courses. It was delicious, but there was way too much food. They had a dance floor and the kids got up and danced. I may or may not have stolen 10 denim coasters from this place, stuck in my tube top dress. Can’t say! We had a great evening and we got taxis to come back to the Villa. I was asleep by 8:30 PM. The sun  had taken all the life out of me for the day.

The girls and their ice cream at Mrs. Sippy.

The boy cousins….and Millie!

Mexicali for dinner!

I was up early again so did some work on Tuesday morning. Tuesday afternoon we went shopping again.  Tuesday night we went to dinner with just the adults. The babysitters were seen as terrible by the kids. The kids were horrible and texted us a lot. Irritating! We did have a stern talk with them once we returned. However, only one of us returned and the rest of us went to the Goat Bar for live music. We danced and sweat. Did I mention that Bali is super humid? Ugh!

This was one of the creepy bars we went to. Cool, yet creepy!

The Goat and some shots! There was dancing as well. It was a sweaty and fun night!

Wednesday it was back to Mrs. Sippy. Matt wasn’t well, and my belly started to react badly. We had a chef at the villa for dinner and it was amazing.

Thursday I was sick, flu sick, full on Bali Belly and achy. But nothing stopped us from going to the Sacred Monkey Sanctuary.

Jack was in heaven. He loves monkeys.

How cute are these things?

Ah! This little monkey actually had his weiner in his mouth at one time. Then played with himself. I have it on video. Cute, yet disturbing.

While we were at the monkey sanctuary, most of the guys went golfing. Seems they saw monkey as well. In fact, James made a great shot close to the hole and a cheeky little monkey came along and stole the ball. Hilarious. Couldn’t happen to a better person!

See the monkeys in the distance?

When we got back from the monkey sanctuary I went to bed. I did actually go with everyone to dinner because I couldn’t miss out on fun, but it wasn’t terribly fun. It was a place called Sarong! I was told the food was amazing, but I ate very little. Ugh! We went back to the house and I went to bed. In the middle of the night the air conditioner froze up and started spitting ice and water. Fortunately, we were familiar with this as when we lived in the Middle East the same thing used to happen, especially when it was humid.

Friday was James’ birthday. We spent most of the morning at the villa. It rained a bit, as seems to be come in Bali, we then went to lunch with Lou and the kids to Sea Circus.

The guys went to another pool and resort, but I can’t remember the name.

The brothers clearly had fun!

Jack, Millie, Billy and I went to the beach to meet up with the guys, then Millie and I headed to shop.

This was where we met the brothers!

We got back to the house to shower and head to Ku De Ta for a beach front dinner to celebrate James’ birthday, for real.

The six Telfords.

The women of the trip!

The men of the trip!

The entire gang with the beautiful sunset.

Gorgeous!

Saturday morning we decided to go on a snorkeling trip. It may have ended up being the sickest I have ever been on a boat. Oh lord!

We were getting instructions on Saturday morning for the day on the water, snorkeling and seeing manta rays.

The boat ride was beyond sickening. And why we thought it was okay for them to be on the top of the boat is beyond me!

Sick Dana.

Snorkeling beginning.

These were massive beasts. I would say their wing span was at least 10 feet. This picture does not do them justice! It was incredible.

Jack took his GoPro and also got some phenomenal videos.

We called it a day early as our boat had started throwing off exhaust fumes early on and several of us, me included, were barfy sick as a result.

The ride back to the villa was only about 7 miles but took 45 minutes. Clearly the roads are not built for any kind of traffic. We spent the rest of the afternoon at the villa. Saturday evening we ended up getting burgers at the villa. It was a quiet night as a lot of us were a bit ill. The boys had gone out earlier to watch an Aussie rugby league match and I went to get cash to settle up our bill at the villa. The kids had gone off on their own to shop and thought they were super grown up. It was kind of cute. And when Jack got back, he had bought me a pair of earrings. Bless him! Millie contributed as well, but told Jack he owed her. Ha!

Sunday morning it was raining when we got up. It was a great day to pack and clean up. We were packed by 10 am and awaited our transfer to the Intercontinental for the last night of our Bali stay.

Our transfer to the Intercontinental took about 35 minutes. We got there, checked in and went straight to the restaurant by the pool. We had a bite to eat, the kids got into the pool and Matt, Stuart and I had a walk on the beach. In the end we decided we wished we would have had a few more days at this resort. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.  We got in the pool after our beach walk. There wasn’t really dinner to speak of, but the kids ate and Stuart and I ate their remains. It was a bit odd.

The incredible sunset!

We spent the rest of the evening sitting on beanbags and just hanging out. Matt, Nicole, Josh and Harper left later in the evening. We all cried and cried. I hate leaving this family, mainly because we all live so far from each other and it’s usually a while before we can get together again.

Jack, Josh, Millie and Harper!

Sunday morning we were up and ready to head to the airport. We went for breakfast and then came back to check the room one more time. We headed to the lobby where James, Lou and the kids met us to say good bye. Again, there were tears, and our farewells were a bit sad. It’s so difficult being so far away from family.

We got to the airport and Stuart sprang it on me that he had upgraded us to premium economy for the Singapore to LA flight. What a treat! More comfort and better food seemed fine with me.

In the airport we did our best to spend the rest of our Rupiah. We bought snacks and a couple of beverages. We waited to board our flight. Premium Economy proved to be nice. It was a great deal more comfortable, but 17 hours on a plane is still 17 hours on a plane. I did sleep a lot more, but my left knee gave me pains. However, I think some of that has to do with my age at this stage. It was nice to ride a bit more comfortable for sure.

I watched a few movies, slept a bit, had two meals, and a chatty seat mate in Millie. She was so impressed with the seats and the way they leaned back and had a foot rest that raised up.

We landed around 10 pm LA time. When we went through customs, Stuart got stopped to go through another check point with the agriculture guy and had to have all of our bags scanned. They came up with nothing so we assumed it was totally random.

When we got into the hotel just after midnight, we ordered some door dash, ate and went to bed. At least most of us went to bed. Millie didn’t sleep at all. I slept off and on, as I kept hearing Millie’s AirPods and seeing the light on her phone. It was totally irritating.

We got up around 8 am and went down to get breakfast, discovering the breakfast at the hotel was crap. So we decided to head on to the airport. I had developed Bali Belly again and was quite miserable.

Our flight home was painless. We got back to our house around 2 pm and within two hours we were totally unpacked and had two loads of laundry done. The worst part about a vacation is coming back home. Stuart and I decided to go grocery shopping.

Mitch, Elise and the boys came over and we ordered dinner. It was a bit of a late night and I was hopeful that meant we would all have a great night’s sleep. No such luck. Wednesday morning Millie informed us she hadn’t slept at all. I didn’t sleep a lot and Jack and Stuart were up early as well. I was supposed to go to lunch with my team but I just couldn’t. It was too much and I was super foggy. Instead, we just lazed around the house for the entire day. I did some work on the project and that was about it. We went in the pool in the early evening and then tried to get the kids to bed at a reasonable time.

Thursday, Jack slept until almost 2 pm and Millie slept until 4 pm. Can you say ‘jetlag’? Yep! The worst. We knew we wouldn’t have a hope of Millie going to bed that evening, but when she finally did on Thursday night, we decided we would need to actually wake her up Friday morning and not let her sleep past noon.

Thursday when I got up I drove Stuart to the dentist and then went shopping. He would be in the chair for at least 3 hours getting his $9,000 worth of teeth work done. Thank goodness this little project came along. That money has made things way more bearable this summer. I collected him around noon and we went home to do very little the rest of the day.

We were supposed to do something with the Reynolds Thursday evening, but we were still wiped out. We made it an early night for all. I told the kids they needed to be up and around because we were going to Sunsplash with my friend Debi and her boys. It was hotter than blue blazes. We stayed at Sunsplash all day. When we got  home, we hung out with the Hills.

Saturday morning I didn’t wake up until 10:30 am and realized that Jack missed his volleyball clinic. I was so upset with myself. I apologized all over myself. It was terrible. This jetlag has really gotten the best of me this time.

Stuart had been shopping the previous day for the food at our house on Saturday with the Reynolds and Tawneys. They arrived around 4 pm. We swam, had appetizers and then had dinner. It’s always so much fun with these people.

This was the fruit charcuterie board Stuart made!

Sunday I was supposed to walk with Sue but she let me know she wasn’t feeling well. She NEVER cancels, so I knew it was bad. So I went back to bed. She tested and it was negative. We were supposed to have friends over that we haven’t seen in forever, but I was still fuzzy, so we canceled. We did absolutely nothing on Sunday.

Monday I got up to take Jack to school for a WEB(Where Everyone Belongs) training. He was going to help with the 7th grade orientation on Tuesday. He was at school until 3 pm. Millie went to the dentist and then I went to school to try to finish my classroom, but it was so hot I couldn’t tolerate it. Stuart and I then took Millie to her friend’s house to do tie dye T-shirts. It was her friend Olivia. Millie gave Olivia the tie dye kit for her birthday. We went to lunch and then picked her up around noon. She was due to start gymnastics on Monday at 4 pm. When she got home she fell asleep on the sofa. She was still struggling with jetlag as well. I woke her up and she was mad. We fought. But I’m the end, Mama won and dragged her tail to gymnastics! I told her if she didn’t go she would have to quit gymnastics. She must have known I was serious because she did end up going.

We picked her up from gymnastics at 7:30 pm and she said she had fun. We then went to Chili’s to celebrate my birthday with the kids, which was the following day. The waiter was horrible. I called him an asshole and Jack laughed. Both kids went to bed quite easily once we got home. Millie didn’t go to sleep right away, but it was okay.

Tuesday morning I clearly hit my alarm and woke up in a panic at 7:10 am. Jack was supposed to be at school at 6:40. Dang! I was to be at the Queen Creek Performing Arts Center for my first day at my new job at 7:30 am. Obviously, we were all late. Geez! To be honest, jetlag was still haunting us. The day was fine, but overwhelming at the same time. Oh, and it was my birthday. Ha! I came home for lunch and opened my presents. The kids and Stuart got me a Keurig, a gift card to Old Navy and K-cups. That evening we went to Postinos with Mitch and Elise. We then carried on to the White Rabbit, an underground speak easy in downtown Gilbert. It was fantastic!!!! Sadly, Mitch didn’t feel well.

The infamous Elise!

These are our neighbors whom we adore! The White Rabbit is a novelty for sure.

Wednesday morning I was up and out the door, taking Jack to school. The traffic was horrific! I carried on to the district office for more ‘new teacher’ training. Such fun! I ended up meeting Stuart and Millie for lunch.

I took Stuart to the airport once he was home from taking Millie to gymnastics. I stopped at Lakeshore Learning teacher supply store and threw some cash at them in order to get my new room ready. I stayed out until Millie was finished with gymnastics, picked her up, got the kids McDonald's and headed home. I crashed.

Thursday I took Jack to school and left Millie at home. I went to a team leader meeting instead of the new teacher orientation. It’s all kind of wasted on me.

Friday all teachers showed up to school. I was a bit nervous about meeting with my teammate who was the team leader last year, but she seemed very cooperative and my entire team was ready to jump on board the whole idea of cohesiveness. It made it so much nicer for me, obviously. I did go pick Millie up around 1 PM and she helped me try to finish up my classroom.

Saturday I took Millie to gymnastics and then went into work. I spent a few hours there and then returned to pick up Millie. We went to Target so Millie and Jack could shop. This was what Millie bought.

It’s a Mario race track. Jack put it together and they both played with it. It was kind of funny.

The rest of the day was spent working on my ‘other’ job and that project. That evening, the kids, Liz and I went to dinner and to see Lion King at the Gammage. I had bought these tickets for myself for my birthday. This was obviously before Stuart planned his trip to the UK, but it couldn’t be helped. Liz was super willing to attend with us. It was so magnificent. And although Jack didn’t want to go initially, he loved it. He spent the following days watching all Disney movies. It was kind of cute.

Sunday I should have been walking with Sue, but she had messaged to say she was still not feeling well, so had to cancel. It gave me a chance to sleep in, but I didn’t. Millie’s friend Maci came over for a play date, which was fun for Millie. I just worked while the girls played. It was a very productive day for me for sure.

Monday was a bit manic! I went to school and did my best to tidy up my room so that when Meet the Teacher  rolled around at 4 o’clock it wouldn’t look like a disaster. I got most of it done, and then had to rush off to pick Jack up. We went back to our house so that he could change into his volleyball clothes, and Millie to change into her leotard. I then ran Jack through McDonald’s for food, took Millie to a friend’s house who would deliver her to gymnastics, and then brought Jack back to Gavin’s for a ride to open gym. I got back to school about ten minutes before the first set of parents came at 4 o’clock. I had all but one set of parents show up for Meet the Teacher. I have five staff member’s kids which is no pressure at all, right?

I got home and absolutely dropped! I was relieved that we had one more day before students came to school. I picked up Jack at the Starbucks from volleyball open gym, after I picked Millie up at gymnastics and then we all went home and crashed.

Tuesday Millie was supposed to go to lunch with Sue, but Millie called me and was nearly in tears. She said her head hurt and her tummy hurt. I instantly thought I should probably go home and get her a Covid test. She got a little better throughout the day, so I decided I would hold off on the test.

Wednesday was the first day of school and it was amazing! I am super lost, but that’s normal! Ha! Millie also had a great first day. She met some new friends and even invited two of them to her birthday party the first weekend in August. When school was over I ran to pick up Jack and then took Millie to gymnastics. Jack and I were supposed to go eat sushi, but he decided he didn’t want to. So that was fine. So we went home and then I went to pick Millie up after gymnastics. I got her McDonald’s as well as Jack. The rest of the evening with spent working on the project that makes me want to poke  my eyes out.

Thursday was another day at school and, once again, it was amazing!I have 28 students and they are all really nice kids. I don’t have one student at this point that I think will be a handful. However, I did have the class from hell last year so anything has to be better.

Thursday night Jack went to open gym for volleyball and I went to a parent gymnastics meeting where I nearly sold a kidney to keep this girl in gymnastics. It is insane money? Thank goodness for a part-time second job.

Friday I was exhausted and felt as if the day had lasted forever. Although tiring, it was still a great day. And I haven’t made anyone cry yet. After school Millie and I went and picked up Jack from Rock Point, the church that’s right next to Casteel High School. We came home and I did a little bit of work while Jack and Millie watched television. I took Jack and his friend Carter to the junior high splash bash. When I got home Elise came over and we had a swim. Carter’s mom brought Jack back to the house after the splash bash.

Saturday morning I got up and had to wrangle Millie in order to get her to gymnastics She has been complaining about her knee hurting and told me that one of her coaches told her she should get a knee brace. I think she likes the idea of a knee brace, but didn’t really understand that it really doesn’t help you long-term. So I went into the gym and spoke to her male coach who she never tells that her knee hurts, and he said if she kept complaining about it to take her to the doctor. But I asked her why she never told him that her knee hurt. She said that she was afraid of him. And then kind of laughed, and told her that she needed to tell him when her knee hurts.  On my way out the door I told him why she didn’t ever tell him I need her. I also said a little bit of intimidation from the coach is actually what makes the athletes perform a little bit better.

After I dropped Millie at gymnastics I headed to school for a little while. Elise came and helped me put up a bulletin board. I then quickly lost focus so we just decided to go eat lunch. We stayed out until the time to pick Millie up from gymnastics. Then I ran through McDonald’s to get her the ever so nutritious lunch of McDonalds and then we headed home. And the time that I was out, Jack asked me if he could go and have a sleepover at Carter‘s house and so I took him to Carter’s house once I was home. When I got back to the house I finished up some work on the project and  then rested for a while. Around 5:30 Ken and Maytee came over and brought Lexi. They stayed for a little while and we ordered Thai takeout. Then they left and Lexi had a sleepover with Millie. Lexi is so sweet to Millie and often wants to hang out with Millie even though she is 4 years older.

I went to walk with Sue and then she took me for breakfast for my birthday. It was so fun to be with her again. I had a delightful Texas Benedict at the Hen House. The base was cornbread and it had pulled pork then a poached egg with Hollandaise sauce. Rich and well worth the calories. After breakfast I went to school and worked for a while. I got my plans written and felt accomplished. I went home and decided to swim, all alone. No kids wanted to come out with me. It didn’t hurt my feelings at all. I took Jack to Gilbert Regional Park to play basketball with some kids from his team at school last year. When I picked him up he told me he wouldn’t probably go again. When I asked him why, he said that those kids were giving him trouble for playing the ‘gay’ sport of volleyball. As you would guess, I told him that my 13 year old self would have told them to eff off. He’s too nice to do that, so instead he will just avoid their comments and not play a sport he’s rather good at and really likes. I told him to tell them he didn’t appreciate their comments and that was why he probably wouldn’t come play with them again. I hate teenagers!

Monday I got to school and discovered my work hadn’t been saved on the computer. I almost started crying. It is all so overwhelming anyway, then add in the frustration of not really having plans and you have a perfect storm. After school I took Millie to the gym, picked Jack up from football and then he went to volleyball. When I came back to pick up Millie, I discovered she had actually sprained her ankle. Ugh! Her coach even came out to tell me about it. Oh, how this sport scares me for the injuries.

Tuesday I felt very organized for school. I still have a lot to sort out, but it is coming along just fine. After school I took Millie home and headed for some shopping. I then went to collect Jack from football tryouts. We were home for dinner and lazing around. Again, I hit the pool and no child joined me. Finally, after about an hour, they came in the pool. Elise had been at an orchestra meeting for Desert Mountain for Weston, but she and the boys came over afterwards. We had a chat and then she and the boys went home, while the kids and I showered and all went to bed. I was pooped.

Wednesday school was released at 12:55 pm, and does so every Wednesday for teacher professional development and meetings. Millie got a ride home with Mitch and the Hill boys while I attended a math meeting for ‘new teachers’ at the district office. Prior to that, though, I ran to the Dollar Store to get treat bag items for Millie’s birthday party. I ran those things to the house, only to discover Millie wasn’t there. I knew she must be at the Hill’s house. I so appreciate Mitch and Elise letting her come back home with them on Wednesdays, but I don’t want her to intrude on their household each week.

After training, I ran home to get Millie to take her to gymnastics. I then went to pick Jack up from football tryouts, took him home, insisted he shower, and then headed to the airport to get Stuart from his two week time in England. I had missed him for so many reasons. I know no one is meant to do this parenting thing on their own, and I pray to goodness I never have to. I can handle his traveling and I can handle the occasional two week trip to see family, but full time single parent, that is tougher than I am. Once he was in the car, we headed to have a beer before getting Millie from gymnastics. I was thrilled once we got to the gym because some of us whose daughters had outgrown their competition leotards, decided to get together and try to sell and buy them from each other as not to have to buy a brand new one for the tune of $295. Well, I was successful in selling mine for $125, and then I bought one size larger for Millie for $125. Success!

When we got home, Millie showered. The kids went to bed at 9:30 pm and Stuart and I decided to go for a swim. Since it had been storming recently, the pool was cooler than normal. It was actually quite refreshing. We ended up getting out and just sitting and talking for an hour or so. He will be home until Monday, which makes me so happy.

Thursday it was business as usual. I started feeling more and more relaxed at school and the day went really fast. After school I took Millie home. Stuart had been at training all day and collected Jack from football tryouts. He found out he made the team, so was really excited. I went through McDonalds and got the kids food. When I got home, Jack ate and then we headed to Brophy in Phoenix for volleyball open gym. I decided to stay as it was almost an hour drive and it was just easier for me to stay and bring the boys home. We got home just before 10 pm. Stuart was suffering with jetlag a bit and went to bed just after we got home. I stayed up to watch television, and feel asleep in the chair, as is my normal routine.

Friday I took a half day off as it was time for Jack to get his braces off. He was so excited, yet nervous at the same time. I picked him up from school and off we went. While he was getting them off, I went shopping for last minute birthday gifts for Millie. He messaged me about 45 minutes after I left and told me he was finished. He was super pleased with the results.

I went back to school for the second half of the day. It seems my substitute was difficult for the kids to understand, so picking up the pieces to her flub ups wasn’t terribly fun, but we managed. I had one student who went home with a 102 degree fever, so that was exciting. After school I ran Millie home and went to our school happy hour. It was fun! The people I am working with right now are lively and I already feel at home.

I returned home and John and Jenni were at our house. Jenni had made Millie’s birthday cake for her party the following day. Millie picked out the design and Jenni produced a beautiful cake. She always does. We then went out to eat for Millie’s birthday dinner. We told the waiter it was Millie’s birthday, but he didn’t pay attention and didn’t do anything special for her. It made me sad and a little irritated. Customer service just isn’t what it used to be. It’s not as much fun to go out to dinner as it used to be because of the lack of customer service. We got home and Millie went straight to bed, as did I.

Saturday Stuart and I were up before 6 am. Millie came downstairs just after 6 am. She was so excited as it was her 11th birthday. We woke Jack and let her open her presents and then Stuart made her bacon and eggs. She got ready and I took her to gymnastics. Once I had dropped her off I headed to Liz’s to help her pack up her house. She will be moving to Las Cruces at the end of August. Again, I’m so happy for her but very sad for me. My friend Debi was there as well. We helped a great deal, but then decided we both needed to run errands before it got too hot. I went to by some fall decor for my house. I think I’ve let my house go recently. So I felt the need to spruce it up with some fall decorations. I bought a new tablecloth for our dining room table and a few little knick knacks. It made me feel better, at least.

I picked Millie and her friend Ella up from gymnastics and took them through Dairy Queen for lunch. We got home and they played upstairs for a bit. Around 2 pm we headed to Elevate for Millie’s birthday celebration. I was a bit disappointed as they didn’t have a space for us to put our things. The only time we would get a space would be when we went to eat and celebrate with a cake. It sucked and I will never recommend this place for a kid’s birthday party. At any rate, Millie had fun so that was what was important. She got some really nice gifts and then 4 of the girls came back to the house for a sleepover.

A good time was had by all.

Jack ended up staying over at the neighbors. I figured 5 girls was plenty for us. Plus, I always wonder how moms feel who don’t have boys. It’s just easier to have him spend the night somewhere else when she has friends stay over.

The girls came down around 8 pm and wanted Dino Nuggets, so I obliged and made some. They had set up their beds upstairs and were trying to get somewhat settled for the evening. It turns out that around 11 pm they were hungry as well. So snacks were made and they headed back upstairs. I stayed up until I was sure they were asleep. It was just after midnight. Another year, another sleepover, and not to happen again for another year. Whew!
