Jack insists he wants to come home for good in March

So we have spoken about this for a couple of weeks, but again on Sunday Jack said he wanted to stay in Arizona when we returned for spring break in March. His friend, Alex, is going to live with his dad in Thailand for the rest of the year and I think this has prompted Jack’s decision. I asked Alex’s mom how she was going to handle not having Alex. She told me that when she stepped back and considered that the decision needed to be Alex and not her, then it was easier to let him go.

Of course, when we were driving home from school we talked about it. Millie then decided she wanted to stay in Arizona in March as well. As we were talking, Jack asked me how I felt about him staying. I burst into tears. He then said, ‘Mom, I won’t go. I don’t want you to be sad.’ I told him that I would rather be sad for a short time and have him happy than to see him sad everyday here. He’s had difficult times since school started. I’m sure he plays his part in everything, but some of the incidents have not been handled appropriately. I have tried to be really objective, but the school has given the same consequences to the children. The local children are sometimes untouchable, depending on their wasta (their social status in the community). When I explained to Jack that there were mean kids everywhere and moving wouldn’t change that, he said, ‘I know, Mom, but at least things will be addressed and it will be a bit more fair to everyone.’ I know this to be true. So, in saying all of this, he is going to live with Grammie and Pop until we return in July. I still can’t believe it.

Monday he was even more convinced about this decision, so we started working on how to make it all happen. My parents were all in on this idea. It was all starting to be real.

After school on Monday, Millie has swim squad. Stuart stayed to bring Millie home from swim squad and I brought Jack home after school. He got ready for rugby training. When Stuart got home we headed to the club. In the end, Stuart decided he wasn’t going to train after all and ended up coming home shortly after the kids and I got home.

Tuesday I got to school and I started to feel sick. I ended up going home after period 2. I laid around most of the day.  Once everyone was home I checked one last time to see if Jack was really sure he wanted to go home for good in March. He was confident, and We decided we were as well. We know this will be a good thing for him, and it’s not for forever, thank goodness.

I started to feel a bit better in the evening so I decided it was time to clean out a few more things of Millie’s to either throw away or put in our garage sale pile, which is getting rather large.

We decided to be lazy and order the kids McDonalds. I put some of Millie’s toys on Al Ain Swap and Shop and sold some things. Millie is  a bit of a hoarder. Getting her things whittled down to a reasonable amount to bring home is going to be challenging.

Wednesday I went to school. I didn’t feel great but there was too much going on to stay off sick. During the day I sorted out health insurance in Arizona as well as withdrawing him from Brighton College Al Ain and emailing about an open enrollment for him in Chandler. There is so much to do before the end of March.

Millie had a football match after school and Jack had a basketball game. Of course these events were at different schools. Stuart went to Jack’s game and I went to Millie’s match. We rushed to rugby training. When Millie and I arrived, we saw Stuart and Jack pulling up to the club. I dropped Millie off and ran to the house to let the dogs out to pee. Our plan after rugby was to go to the golf club for dinner for sushi night. Cathy and our friend Tiff came with us. Stuart headed back home to put the kids to bed and shower to get ready for his trip. I got home about an hour later. Stuart then was off to the airport to fly to England for his grandmother’s 90th birthday party. I went to bed once he was gone.

Thursday we rushed around to get out the door for school. On the way to school the kids realized they forgotten their helmets for tri club. Millie lost the plot and insisted I go home to get her helmet. When she gets upset, there is nothing to do except walk away and let her meltdown on her own. Then she realizes she is not going to get her way no matter how nasty she is to me, and she stops and apologizes. It’s exhausting.

There were extra helmets at tri club, so the kids were able to ride their bikes after all. I went to the grocery store while the kids were at tri club. I probably should have stayed at school and planned for next week, but I couldn’t be asked. Once tri club was over, we headed home, but had to stop at the petrol station on the way because my back left tire was looking low. I got the tires filled up and we went home. Once we were home the kids unpacked their school bags and ate dinner. Millie decided she wanted to take a bath with one of her bath bombs. Jack joined her. He’s still such a little boy. I’m pretty sure the bathing days are soon to be over.

Cathy and Tiff came over and we ordered curry for dinner. We sat and talked about nothing and everything. Cathy ended up staying over and going with me and DeDe to Dubai on Friday morning. Kayla came to babysit Millie and Jack, although Jack was being collected at 10:30 am for a birthday party and then was going to Alex’s afterward for his last play date before Alex left for Thailand.

The birthday party was a Nerf gun party.

Cathy, DeDe and I left for Dubai at 8 am. We went down to Jumeriah Beach to do some shopping at my favorite trouser place.

I got two new pair of trousers and bought Millie a cute little outfit. We had lunch at El Chico which was amazing. Then we headed to our favorite store, Park and Shop, the place with American products we love to buy once in a while as a novelty. We had a great time.

I got home around 5 pm and went to the club to pick Millie up at the pool. Once we were home I waited for Jack to contact me to pick him up. Instead, Jen, Alex’s mom, called and asked if Jack could sleep over. I felt obligated to let him sleep over as Alex was leaving the next day. They ended up going to the Al Ain Raceway and apparently had a wonderful time.

Officially racers!

Millie and I went to Lara and Brian’s for a cookout. We stayed way later than I had planned. When we got home we showered and Millie got into my bed. With Stuart and Jack being gone, I think she just felt a bit lonely.

I was up by 7 am on Saturday, but Millie slept until nearly 9 am. I took a bit of time to clean out some kitchen cupboards and putting the items on Swap and Shop. I think I might actually get rid of all our things before June. I hope so.

Millie and I went to pick Jack up at 11 am. He said his final farewell to Alex and we headed on our way. When we got home I fed Millie and she went to Islay’s to play for the afternoon. Jack played on his PlayStation and I watched my trashy television. Around 5 pm I went to pick Millie up from Islay’s. We then went to dinner with Sean and his two kids, Carly and Dylan. Dylan has flown in Friday night and Millie was dying to see him as she has a little crush on him. But of course once she saw him she totally clammed up. When I asked her why she did, she responded by saying she was ‘nervous’. She’s 8! I’m in so much trouble.

Meanwhile, Stuart was partying it up with his grandmother in England.

We had dinner At the club and then returned home earlier than expected because in the middle of dinner I got a text from the Year 6 Moms where someone was asking about the English homework. This prompted me to ask Jack if he had homework. Of course he did! Ugh! He’s not the most reliable sort in the homework department. I told him that would have to change when he lived with Grammie and Pop.

When we got home, Millie showered and went straight to bed, while Jack got his homework done and then went to bed. I sat up for a while and then decided I needed the rest as well. Another week has passed us by. My, how the time flies. In 5 weeks we will be back in Arizona for spring break and then two weeks after that I will be leaving my boy for three months. I can’t think about it.

Living our best life!

Sunday morning we got up and went to breakfast. Before we left the villa we saw a huge ray just off to the side of the bridge over the water. It was quite spectacular.

He was a big fella.

Jack rang for a buggy to collect us at the buggy stop so that we could get a lift to breakfast.

Once at breakfast, this was the scene. And just the day before he was commenting on how he had stopped eating so much. Who is he fooling?

We were supposed to go out on jet skis after breakfast, but the water was rough so the guy at the jet ski hire said that tomorrow would be a better day for it. So we opted to go back out to the water blob. Because the water was a bit choppy, it was much more difficult to get up on the blob. After the blob, we made our daily trip to the milk bar for a milk shake.

Then we decided to go to the pool, walking along the beach.  Jack and Millie were being a bit foolish and he was irritating her. We heard a scream and she let in like she was drowning. Jack has gone under water and was pulling her feet. He was being an absolute pest. It was so obnoxious that another guest at the resort jumped into the water to ‘save’ Jack. Talk about embarrassing! Dang kids! They both got out and I walked them around to the gentleman to have them apologize for disturbing his holiday. He was very nice and said there was no need to apologize.

They then sat out and were a bit solemn for a while. Then they decided to go to the games room upstairs. They played up there for a while and then came down to ask if they could come swimming again. We let them in the pool for about 15 minutes and then headed off to our lunch at the Crab Shack, which was about a 20 minute walk. As we walked down the beach, the kids dove in and out of the water. It was another adventure in and of itself.

We decided we wanted a picture of our foot print in the Maldives. Jack’s looks as if we cut a few toes off. Don’t worry, he still has his toes.

Lunch was just as yummy as the previous day at the Crab Shack. We did all try something new, even Millie.

Jack never met a mussel he didn’t like.

The back drop to this place is unreal.

After a nice lunch, doesn’t everyone have a nap on the sand?

The kids were supposed to go kayaking after lunch, but because the water was rough, it was canceled. They ended up going to the kids’ club for about an hour and then we’re delivered back to the villa. Stuart and I had about an hour of alone time. We seldom find this time with absolutely nothing to do and no distractions. It was nice.

Both kids jumped off the back of our villa and swam for a bit. Stuart and I had a bit of a nap and the kids had a snack. When we were awake, we took the kids back to the blob and water park.

While they blobbed, I went to the milk bar to get Stuart and myself a juice and a muffin for the kids. We then walked the beach on the opposite side of our bungalow. After looking around there for a bit and seeing more fish and tiger sharks, we decided we would snorkel there on Monday.

We headed back to the bungalow and started our showers. We were booked in for a meal at Kanusen, an Asian fusion restaurant. We decided to go to the pool side for a drink before hand while the kids played in the Man Cave upstairs. We then walked to the restaurant.

This was essentially outside. We were on a balcony and you could hear the waves hitting the shore.

Our all-inclusive premium package allows us to eat at any restaurant, as many times as we like. Kanusen was a place we decided we would return to the following evening. The food was the best I have had on the island, and that’s saying a lot! I started with a crispy rice tuna.

I then had sweet and sour chicken as my main dish. Millie has edamame, her favorite, as her starter, and then teriyaki chicken and broccoli. Both these dishes pleased her for sure. Stuart had crispy pork belly and roasted lamb. I can’t remember.
Jack started with a sushi roll and then ordered salmon, but didn’t feel so well so ended up not eating it. It looked amazing, but I couldn’t even have a taste because I was so full.

We did our best to tackle this dessert for two. The chocolate fingers at the back of the bowl were Millie’s favorites, of course.

After dinner we were going to go back to the pool and have sheesha, but the kids were tired and there wasn’t any entertainment on for Sunday evening. So we got a buggy back to the bungalow and went to bed.

I woke up early on Monday morning and sat on the porch, with this as my view. Millie slept until between Stuart and myself after the first night. On Sunday night all she did was budge up against me all night. In fact, one time when I moved her over she sat up and said, ‘stop touching me!’ And then she swung her arm at me and hit me. I’m hoping she was doing that in her sleep, but I’m not so sure.

Monday morning the water was choppy again, but we hoped it would clear up in the afternoon. We went to breakfast and called Grammie and Pop. It was so fun to talk to them. Breakfast was amazing, as always, and the view wasn’t bad either.

You can’t really see us, but you can see the view.

We went to speak to the guys who rent the jet skis and they were sure the waves would be more calm in the late afternoon so we were going to be prepared to go out at 5 pm, after the kids had their Little Chef cooking class.

In the meantime, before Jack went off to play basketball for an hour, we decided to snorkel in the cove across from our place. Oh what a wonderful idea that was. We saw parrot fish, a slew of other fish that I couldn’t even begin to name, rainbow fish, and even heard the parrot fish munching on the algae. It was amazing. The only other time I’ve seen fish so beautiful was snorkeling in Hawaii.

She’s a regular little fish.

Preparation for snorkeling.

Once we had finished snorkeling, Jack went to play basketball, while Millie, Stuart and myself went to the pool. Once Jack had sweat his tail off, he came back to the pool for a swim.

Millie had an encounter with a mermaid, and then we had lunch around 1:30 pm and went back to the pool for a hula hoop lesson and juggling lessons. Then Stuart and the kids went to the blob for another go. I went back to the bungalow and jumped off the deck. The waves and wind overwhelmed me, so I didn’t last long.

When they returned from the blob, Millie put on an acrobatic show while Jack juggled fruit from our mini-bar. Thank goodness that’s all free because it certainly wasn’t edible after he was finished with it. They entertained us until it was time for their Little Chef cooking class, where they made margherita pizzas.

After their cooking class we headed back to the bungalow for showers and to get ready for dinner at Kanusan again.

This was my starter on Monday evening. Shrimp! And then my main was pork fried rice, which I ate very little of, sadly.

Once dinner was over, we went to the pool bar for a limbo competition. Millie was really good, but they had to do it with a partner, and her partner was a bit bigger than Millie, which made it difficult for Millie to help hold her up. She had fun and that was the important thing. Millie’s new friend was named Madison, but Millie thought her name was Medicine. Ha!

How low can you go?

We took some very exhausted children back to the room for much needed sleep. It was a good day even though the wind didn’t allow us to jet ski. There was still plenty for us to do.

Tuesday morning we got up to an even windier day. The wind was blowing about 30 miles an hour, which cools you a bit, but again, doesn’t allow for boat excursions or jet skiing.

After breakfast we had a game of pool, which Millie and Stuart won. Then the kids decided they wanted to go to the kids’ club for Pirate Day activities. So Stuart and I lounged at the pool for a while.

Somebody has to do it!

We actually went to the Crab Shack for our last lunch. We had to walk as the boat wasn’t able to be on the water.

When we returned we took the kids to the kids’ club for the afternoon. We had a nap on our deck, then returned to the kids’ club to see that Millie had lost her silver tooth in the taffy. I’m not sure the entire tooth came out, but I suppose it will eventually. We had taken Jack’ trainers so he could play basketball at 6 pm. We then returned to the pool and left them at the kids’ club to continue their fun.

When we returned to pick Millie up, we went to the basketball court to watch Jack play basketball. I’m thinking he was the only child who knew what he was doing.

Tuesday evening at the Baa Baa Grill it was Maldivian night. There was entertainment of music and a fantastic fire show. We carried our fun back to the pool bar where the band was playing. It was a great last evening.

Wednesday morning it was windier than it had been before. We had our last photo on the walkway in front of our villa. This paradise holiday was drawing to an end. We were, however, granted a late check out for 3 pm, which was so appreciated.

We had breakfast and then decided we needed to play a game of pool and take one more dip into the ocean. Oh, we did hit the Milk Bar one last time as well.

The water was a bit chillier, but still delightful. After about a half hour, we went back to the pool and had lunch. Our all inclusive package was no longer valid at noon on Wednesday, and the pool bar food wasn’t a part of our package anyway. So we bit the bullet and paid for our lunch.

The sushi was yummy.

After eating lunch, the kids had one more session of circus training. Millie mastered some hula hoop skills, which Jack improved his juggling. The staff was really good with children, and the kids loved it. The time finally came when we had to go back to the room for showers and to finish packing. This had really been a trip of a lifetime.

After we had checked out, we waited at the boat dock for the sea plane to arrive. When it did, the plane had difficulty getting tied up. It seems a piece had broken off the plane, which made it difficult to tie the plane down. When they did finally stop the plane and some people disembarked, it was clear that one of the ladies had been sick on landing. Yuck! The thought of getting on that plane, with as much as it was bouncing around, made me a bit ill. The sad part was, we had no choice.

One last photo for my very spoiled children.

Oh, did they have fun!

Once we were back at the main airport in Male, our wait wasn’t terribly long. We boarded the plane and not one of us slept. We watched movies and enjoyed a nice meal. Our flight landed a bit early which meant we got home a bit sooner than planned, which was nice considering we had to go to school on Thursday. I put some laundry in the wash once we were home. We had put the kids straight to bed when we got home. Stuart and I were in bed by midnight.

School on Thursday was a real struggle. Why we were made to come back for one day is beyond me. I only had 8 children at school on that day, which made things easier. My student teacher started on Thursday. She’s an Emirati and in her last semester of school. She definitely sees the vision of the nation. Unfortunately there are not enough people who do see the vision. She jumped right in and started helping me with the work I had to do. My teaching assistant wasn’t back from her holiday so Shayma’s help was appreciated. The only thing about having a student teacher that I don’t like is the pressure of having things over prepared.

We had an assembly and Millie was awarded her 1st place certificates from the sports day we had a few weeks back. She was very pleased with herself.

After school the kids had tri club, then we went to collect the Jaguar from the shop. The kids and I went to the grocery store. When we got home, Cathy was there and we ordered curry for dinner. The kids went to bed and Cathy left around 9 pm. I stayed up and watched The Bachelor, while Stuart went to bed.

Friday we were up relatively early. The kids played and we all lazed around for the entire day. Millie’s friend, Islay, came over just after noon to play and Jack’s friend, Alex came around 3 pm. Alex was coming for a sleepover. I was fixing dinner when I realized that all four of the kids were in the guest room playing Uno. It was so sweet. They were all getting along and the fact that they chose to play a game together, rather than be on electronic devises, warmed my heart.

The even enjoyed dinner together.

Islay went home around 6 pm. The boys went upstairs and spent the rest of the evening watching a movie in Jack’s room. Stuart, Cathy and I ordered sushi from a new place in town and it was wonderful. We didn’t tell Jack we ordered sushi because he would have wanted some. We are so selfish.

Saturday morning everyone was awake and ready to walk out the door by 9:15, with a bit of prodding. Jack, Alex, Millie and I went to Motion Gate, one of the amusement parks in Dubai. We had an amazing time, as you can see from the pictures.

The Penguins of Madagascar.

The infamous 3D ride.

The potentially wet ride.

And no amusement park is complete without a trip to the play park.

We didn’t get home until around 8:30 pm. The kids went straight to bed. It was an exhausting day.

Sports week and a BIG surprise for the kids!

This week at school it was Sports Week. Sunday started out with the prep school, Years 3-5, participating first. Their PE lessons this first half of Term 2 have been focused on all of the field events. The kids were very excited. Even my favorite challenge child this year got the courage up to do all of the events. I was so very proud of him.

Jack’s has an orthodontist appointment after school. We were wise enough to bring pain medicine with us, but he was still in pain. It just makes his mouth so sore. Once we were finished at the orthodontist we came back to the house to pick up Stuart and Millie. We are down to one car right now as the Jag is being serviced. So we are tag teaming with the car. We went to the club for a quick committee meeting regarding all the upcoming events for the remainder of the school year. We stayed for a bit to watch the England France 6 Nations rugby match, but England were getting smashed so we decided to head home for dinner and our nightly routines.

I really didn’t want to go to school on Monday, but I put on my big girl panties and went anyway. Jack’s mouth was sore, as it normally is after a tightening. My teaching assistant was absent and it became an exhausting day for sure, being on my own all day. The kids had swim trials after school. This is the swim meet where they time all the kids. They both did well, I think. They finally got their swim squad hoodies after months of waiting for them.

I got a picture of Millie in her hoodie.

Rugby training was cancelled for both kids, which was a relief. They are so tired and we really do meet ourselves coming and going sometimes.  Stuart skyped his mum and the kids and I waited for a food delivery. We were not inspired to cook so we ordered in.

Jack is sporting his USA swim cap. That kid next to him is the same age as Jack. The boy has grown.

On Tuesday the senior school has their swim trials. These are a bit different as the junior school kids swim 25 meters as opposed to the 50 meters the senior school kids swim. Once we were home from school we took our living room rug to a neighbor. Our house is not getting as bare as I need it to be, although we have sold a number of things. My home is to get most big items sold by spring break. I made a meal and chocolate no bakes for my teammate whose wife had a baby.

Yummy!

However, I burned what Stuart and I were supposed to eat. Bless him, he ate it anyway.

Wednesday morning was Jack’s Sports Day. He got third in the 1500 meter run and won the 100 meter run, but pulled his quad during that run so was unable to compete in the rest of his events. He was a bit bummed about it. He had basketball practice after school and was able to practice. He is starting to get frustrated with the competition here. I think because he knows we are going home in a few months he has decided it’s okay to not settle for mediocrity. I am pretty sure if we told him he could stay in March when we go back for spring break, he would do so.

Millie and I had soccer training after school. Rachel, the gal I usually help, wasn’t able to make practice, so I ran it. Yep, haven’t a clue about the rules. Fortunately, all the girls know the rules and just played a match while I watched. We went to rugby training after the other sport practices. Rugby training for Jack ended up being games as there were not enough players there to train. We came home for the kids to have a snack and then they were off to bed.

Thursday morning we had an all school assembly, which has never happened. It was to announce the winners of the Sports Day competitions. Ryle House won the overall competition. We are all in Ryle House so we were excited. After a long day at school, we left at 3pm as Tri Club was canceled. Stuart dropped Jack and myself at Souq Planet for Jack to get a hair cut. I bought some sweet treats at the supermarket while Jack got his hair cut. Little did he know that we were making sure his hair would stay out of his face for our trip we were going to take the following morning. We started our half term break after school Thursday.

I went for a pedicure once Jack and I were back at the house. The kids showered and were told we would need to make it an early night as we would get up early on Friday morning to head to Motion Gate, an amusement park in Dubai. Little did they know that we were really getting them up early to fly to the Maldives! One of the teachers at our school passed me at the end of the day on Thursday and said, ‘I hear you are going to the Maldives!’ To which I said, ‘Did you also hear is was a secret and our kids don’t know?’ This was just as Jack was coming to my room after school. Fortunately he didn’t hear and she apologized all over herself. Obviously, Stuart was the most excited for this trip, as he is shared it with everyone.

Once I was home from my pedicure, I did some more sorting out of Millie’s stuff. Then our neighbors, Siv and Marion, brought their girls, Jaya and Kiera, over for them to play with Millie. They had asked if we could watch the girls so they could go to a salsa lesson. I hate to say no to such nice people, and although our plan was to put the kids to bed early, I said we’d watch them.

In the end, I took them back to their house to go to bed. With Millie and Jack in bed, they didn’t really want to stay with me and Stuart. When we got back to their house it dawned on me that the things I needed to do I couldn’t do because I wasn’t at my house. Oh well. Stuart thought he and I would nap for a bit, but I’m just not able to do that before a trip. In fact, I usually find a hundred things to do before I go on a trip. So it made no difference to me. The parents got home just after 9 pm and I went back home to shower and watch television. I just couldn’t sleep.

We woke the kids at 11:30 pm. Fortunately, neither of them asked questions and just got in the car and went back to sleep. Once we were in Dubai at the hotel where we were going to park our car, the kids were awake, but again, had no idea what was going on. When we got to the airport for check-in all the info was spilled and Millie said, ‘Ah, what about Motion Gate,’. We all laughed and proceeded to security.

We decided to get a bite to eat and then waited to board the plane. The flight to Male was uneventful. Millie slept through entire way, but the rest of us just dozed a bit. When we arrived in Male we were met by a Finolhu representative who checked up in at the sea plane desk. That was a surprise for the kids as well, one that Jack was not terribly keen on. I found out during the flight that he was scared we were going to crash.

These sea planes were ready to roll.

The view from above was amazing.

And this was the view of our resort.

The kids were very impressed.

We were a little impressed as well.
We got our swimmers on and got ready for pool and ocean. This was a VW camper van that was sitting on the beach.

Everyone snorkeled.
The sunset was amazing.

Saturday morning the sun rose just beyond our bungalow. It was simply gorgeous.

We caught a buggy to breakfast.

After breakfast we stopped in at the kids’ club and discovered our children were two of the 13 on the island. It seems the Coronavirus caused a lot of people to cancel their holiday for the time being. So instead of being at 90% capacity, the resort is at about 40% capacity. It’s very nice for us. We booked the kids in to many activities for the rest of our stay. We then decided to go to the Milk Bar for our daily milk shake. We then went into the ocean and had a great time.

This bouncy ocean fun was a favorite for the kids.

After a bit of bouncy fun, we went back to our bungalow and decided to snorkel out a ways to an area that was recommended to us.

Everyone was ready except for the photographer.

Snorkeling was a lot of fun.

We had an amazing lunch at the Crab Shack. I hate to bore you with pictures of food, but I will.

Soft crab tacos

Coconut shrimp

Tuna burger, which was to die for.

This is the jetty where we waited for the boat to return us to the other side of the island so we could go on the Turtle/Dolphin Safari, which was amaze balls!

Please don’t focus on my thighs! Look on Facebook for the amazing videos of what we saw. It was unbelievable! We were truly in paradise.

The snorkeling took it out of him.

Once we were back on the island we decided to go to the pool. The kids got mock tails and swam around for a bit, while Stuart and I relaxed under an umbrella. We went back to the villa and the kids decided to swim out the back. That didn’t last long because they both decided to shower and get ready for dinner. We did the same and then went for dinner. The theme was Bollywood night.

The waiter at lunch taught the kids to fold a napkin into a catamaran. The waiter at dinner taught them to make a person. Clever!

After dinner we sat pool side and watched a circus show, full of high wire acrobatics and a man spinning inside a large hula hoop. It was very entertaining. Then a traditional Bollywood dancer came out for a dance. A band followed and the kids and I danced for a while before deciding to call it a night. A spectacular two days in paradise with four left to enjoy! This is a dream holiday for sure.
